That this endemic species is not related to taxa of Paracaryum or Mattiastrum should have been clarified at the latest since Meikle (1985). Unfortunately, there are still misapplications in some current checklists. Phylogenetically, the species clearly belongs to Cynoglossum s. str. (Pourghorban & al. 2020), which confirms the well known view. Representatives of the first two genera are not found in Cyprus.
