Systematics

According to Meikle (1977) only one taxon, C. spinosa var. canescens, is known to occur in Cyprus. A revision by Inocencio & al. (2006) mentions three taxa for Cyprus. We prefer to follow the recent treatment by Fici (2014) who accepts one species with two subspecies and various varieties. However, the subspecies are sympatric in most parts of the Mediterranean and should be classified as species. Following this concept, only one species has been found in Cyprus.
