Description

Procumbent or ± erect, whitish lanate-tomentose annual. Stems branching from base, 10-25 cm. Lower and median leaves ovate-oblong in outline, 2-5 cm, 2-pinnatisect, segments oblong, c. 1 mm broad, obtuse; upper leaves 1-pinnatisect, uppermost usually oblong-spathulate, simple, apically toothed or entire. Capitula radiate; peduncles becoming thickened. Involucre 1-1.5 cm broad; inner phyllaries elliptic-lanceolate, acute, margins scarious. Receptacle hemispherical or broadly conical; paleae oblong, mucronate, ± scarious, midrib often becoming dark. Ray flowers c. 20, neuter; ligules 5-10(-13) mm. Disc corolla tubes often becoming blackish at maturity but not inflated at base. Achenes obconical, c. 2 mm, almost smooth, pale or with dark streaks, oblique at apex and ± exauriculate or bearing a short scarious auricle.
